Herb UK Supports My New Hair
In our industry, we all appreciate how looking good can affect how we feel, which in turn impacts upon other aspects of our life.
‘How can a patient feel positive and strong when their personal self-image has been rocked to the core by baldness?’ asks Trevor Sorbie, MBE, known for his iconic, pioneering cuts and holder of the title of British Hairdresser of the Year an unrivalled four times. ‘Giving women back their hair - hair that looks natural, attractive and feminine gives them back a little of their confidence to face the world again.’
After helping a family member during cancer treatment, Trevor Sorbie launched ‘My New Hair’ in June 2006, a non-profit organisation to offer advice and wig customisation to clients suffering from medical hair loss.
During more than 30 years in the world of hairdressing, Trevor has often been called upon to cut wigs for photo shoots and fashion shows. Now he brings his expertise in this area to work with women undergoing treatment for cancer and who would like a wig customised for them.
Funds raised by the My New Hair organisation are used to make the service accessible to people in the UK as widely as possible. More than that, Trevor has appealed to the hairdressing industry to support this cause and trains stylists around the country in wig advice and customisation. Many of the top names in hairdressing are part of the My New Hair programme. Trevor’s aim is to train at least 400 hairdressers over the next two years to provide the My New Hair service.
When treatment has been successfully completed and it may be appropriate to consider removing the wig, it is imperative to take care of the hair as it grows back. Both the hair and the scalp are fragile and sensitive at this stage and so abrasive chemical treatments should be avoided. The hair can also grow back with a different texture or colour. Due to the gentle nature of Organic Care and Colour Systems, these products are ideal for use in such circumstances and we are absolutely delighted that the My New Hair team are now recommending that their clients can consider using Organic Care and Colour Systems.
We feel extremely privileged to be part of this wonderful enterprise. ‘We are honoured to be working with Trevor and support this initiative,’ explains Raoul Perfitt, Herb UK’s Managing Director. ‘Our industry is not just about looking good; it is also about feeling good and that in turn helps us to feel capable and confident. The treatment that many of the My New Hair clients undergo requires a real strength and the work of Trevor and his network of trained and committed salons across the country provides psychological support when it is needed most.’
Training seminars for stylists joining the My New Hair programme are held throughout the year and are run by Trevor and his team. The one day seminars include demonstrations, a technical session where each delegate is able to work on models and wigs, as well as covering the important issues of communications and PR.
